As Smart Girls, we want to make the world a better place. But sometimes it can be overwhelming to look around and see how much there is to do — sometimes it feels hard to make a difference. That’s why we created an ongoing series called “The Little Things.” These are little things that you can do by yourself or with your friends and family to create a little something that will make someone in your community’s life a little better.

There’s nothing better than going about your day and having someone say something nice right out of the blue. Whether it be a stranger or someone close to you, kind words can definitely perk up your day.

While we should shower others with positive words every day, January 24 is National Compliment Day. It’s a great day to go out there and let people know that you have something nice to say about them.

If you don’t know the person it can be as simple as complimenting their outfit or a job well done. Think about your friends and family who make you happy and what you’d want to say to them. Write those words out on post-its and leave them inside lunchbags, favorite books or purses. Finding a nice surprise during the day will always bring a smile to someone’s face.

Be sincere and truthful in your compliments with a personal touch. Tell your parents you loved the dinner that was prepared or tell your teacher you appreciate her patience. Showing people that you care lifts your spirits and the ones who receive your thoughtful words.

How will you share compliments on National Compliment Day? Let us know in the comments!
