“I think that just as there were moments when the Washington Post or The New York Times or the Times of London during World War II had a huge mission, we, too, have a huge mission. And that is to listen, to report, to tell stories, to seek out the stories and voices that aren’t being heard, even ones that might feel uncomfortable to us.”— Lydia Polgreen

Three things you’ll want to know about this Smart Girl:

  1. Polgreen has extensive international experience! She spent nearly a decade as a New York Times foreign correspondent based in Africa and Asia. Was Johannesburg bureau chief, South Asia correspondent, and West Africa correspondent for the Times.
  2. Her work in Africa has been recognized with numerous prizes, including the George Polk Award for Foreign Reporting, an Overseas Press Club award and the Livingston Award. In 2007, she was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
  3. Politico noted Polgreen as “one of Twitter’s most prolific commentators on the state of the media in the digital age.”

As a queer woman of color, Polgreen has received an overwhelming amount of support on Twitter from people of color, the LGBTQ community, her former newspaper staff, and her new HuffPost team. Congrats, Lydia!!
