On January 21, 2017, hundreds of thousands of women took to the streets in women’s marches around the world to show their disagreement with Donald Trump’s policies. Labeled ‘The Resistance’, women (and men!) have continued resisting these policies through marches, flooding phone lines, and ongoing campaigns. But now, women around NYC are getting some much-needed inspiration through art.

Almost five months into the new administration and it’s easy to get overwhelmed and exhausted by “resisting”. Wouldn’t it be pretty cool to see a reminder — like a sticker or a poster — right when you needed it most? Enter Resistance is Female: “a new series of Ad Takeovers featuring women artists and their allies”.

Posters and stickers with the phrase “Resistance is Female” have been showing up on phone booths around New York as a way to encourage women to continue resisting — in whatever form that takes for them personally.

New York street artist Abe Lincoln Jr. is one of the only male members of the collective responsible for starting the project. Speaking to Huffington Post, he said they’re hoping the art will be a source of inspiration:

“This is a direct message to women (anyone who self identifies as female) and their allies to keep fighting,” he says. “It’s a general message of encouragement to resist the current ‘status quo’ of intolerance. Whatever your battle is, do it! We want to support you in persevering, speaking up, and fighting.”

Another member of the group, artist Gigi Chen, sees art as a way to engage politically more now than she did growing up:

“Artists are always the ones to really start a dialogue publicly. Feminism as a concept was debated so much in the follow up to the election. That term “Feminism” is something I have lately had to rethink and rediscover. This project “Resistance is Female” is part of that visual movement. If just taking a glance of a poster can start a debate, then indeed this “Feminist” art project is “Political.”

Gigi also notes that art is unique in the way that it can transcend differences in powerful ways. That’s one benefit she sees in the Resistance is Female project:

“As artists, male and female, we have the capability to visualize and show our points of view in a way that one can understand and, hopefully, empathize with.”

Thank you to all of the artists involved with Resistance is Female for your encouragement and support just when we need it most! Follow Resistance is Female on Instagram to see all of the amazing art.
