Ever since Leslie Knope introduced us to Galentine’s Day on Parks and Rec, it’s become the favorite holiday of pals all over the globe. Whether you celebrate Galentine’s Day with a traditional Galentine’s Day brunch, or you’ve made your own special traditions, it’s a great way to celebrate the awesome women in your life. But what happens when one of your friends moves? How can you celebrate Galentine’s Day with a long distance friend?

One of my work besties, Katie, recently moved across the country. We’d been through quite a bit together, and after surviving a huge reorganization at our company, we started a weekly lunch date called “Survivor’s Lunch.” When I found out she was moving, I was thrilled for all the exciting adventures that were waiting for her miles away, but it’s still been hard saying goodbye to a good friend. What can I say? Survivor’s Lunch has never been the same.

I decided that this Galentine’s Day I’d work out a way to try to reduce the distance. Galentine’s Day is all about celebrating your friends and enjoying time with buddies, but that can be incredibly hard when you’re no longer a few minutes away from one another.

There are lots of ways to make Galentine’s Day special, even if you and your friends are miles apart. If you both love cooking, you can do a shared brunch over Skype or Google Chat. After all, Leslie Knope has told us time and again how important breakfast foods are. But maybe you’re like me and cooking just isn’t your game. You can both watch a movie at the same time, or you can even try to arrange a surprise trip to actually hang out with your buddy on Galentine’s Day! But for me, none of those seemed quite right for this Galentine’s Day.

What am I doing for my long-distance friend this year? Since my friend moved away so recently, I decided to send her a care package. I didn’t want to do anything to make her feel homesick, but I also wanted to make sure she knew she’s still got friends who care about her — especially on this most important of friendship days. Nothing too big, just a few fun things to brighten up her Galentine’s Day.

Galentine's Day Care Package

Galentine’s Day is a big celebration of all of your friends, so also asked the third member of our Survivor’s Lunch, Amy, to add some goodies to the care package. Maybe we can’t have Survivor’s Lunch together, and maybe we can’t celebrate Galentine’s Day together, but we can do our best to make sure our friends know they’re cared about. After all, that’s ultimately what Galentine’s Day is all about, ladies celebrating ladies — even if there’s quite a bit of distance between you. It’s tough to have a friend living across the country, but it’s important to support your friends when they set out to chase amazing, new opportunities.

How are you celebrating Galentine’s Day with your long distance friends? Let me know how you can make the day special with your friends living far away in the comments!
